After Kim Kardashian helped the “Vampire Facelift” make the rounds in gossip columns, it was probably only a matter of time before beauty gurus would “vampirize” another body part.
The latest fad is the Vampire Breast Lift. Like the nonsurgical Vampire Facelift, the breast lift is minimally invasive, which may be appealing to some women.
But does it really work and is it safe?
Vampire Breast Lift technique
The Vampire Breast Lift was invented by a cosmetic dermatologist, not a plastic surgeon. Dr. Charles Runels came up with the idea of drawing the patient’s blood from her arm, spinning it through a centrifuge, and separating the platelet-rich plasma. The plasma is then re-injected into the patient’s breasts.
Dr. Runels claims it can stimulate the growth of new collagen and fatty tissue, which can reshape the breasts, correct inverted nipples, and eliminate stretch marks. The official website of the Vampire Breast Lift claims that the technique “works like magic” and that the results last one to two years. The website also admits that the Vampire Breast Lift isn’t right for every woman, noting that “many would do better with surgery,” particularly those who desire a dramatic increase in the size of the breasts.
The critics
Despite the promised benefits of the Vampire Breast Lift, criticism abounds for this new cosmetic approach. “There’s not a single published study that suggests that this treatment used alone has any effect either in the short or long term in the breast,” according to Dr. Olivier Branford, who is a plastic surgeon based in London and the Associate Editor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Branford went on to highlight the lack of clinical evidence to prove that the Vampire Breast Lift is safe for patients. Furthermore, he noted, the short duration of the results may encourage women to go back for repeat treatments. “Temporary tissue expansion increases skin surface area. Repeated breast expansion by injection may accelerate this process as well as cause calcification.” In other words, getting multiple Vampire Breast Lifts may actually make the breasts look droopier than they originally were.
The concern over patient safety has reached the ears of the decision-makers at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This year, the gift bag swag for Oscar nominees was said to have included an invitation for a Vampire Breast Lift. The Academy is now suing Distinctive Assets, which is the company that distributed the gift bags, for making the dicey gift bag swag appear as though the Academy were promoting it.
